Few wise thoughts on web image formats (what kind of image formats should I use?)

After reading an article about image formats on the net and how to use them to save bandwidth I thought I summarize the facts form my readers and for myself:

Use .Jpg format when:

  • you are dealing with large images with a lot of colors (ex. photograps)
Use .Gif format when
  • you are dealing with extremely small image dimensions
  • or animations
In all other cases use .Png format in non-interlaced form especially when the image contains large areas of the same color (ex. screenshots).

In addition use Ken Silverman's PngOut to optimize the size of the .Png files losslessly.
